WHEN TO INVESTIGATE FOR POSSIBLE INFERTILITY?

COMMON CAUSES OF INFERTILITY

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

  • Thyroid Problems

  • Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Generally, 75% of couples will achieve pregnancy within six months, 85% will conceive within one year, and 90% will become pregnant within two years. Approximately 10-15% of couples will be diagnosed with infertility. It is appropriate to investigate for infertility and refer to specialist care if:
 

  • Under 35 years old and have not conceived after having regular unprotected sex for one year.

  • Over 35 years old and have not conceived after having regular unprotected sex for six months.

  • Having regular unprotected sex for less than six months, but not having periods (not ovulating).

  • Considering using donor sperm, eggs or embryos.

  • About to undergo treatment for cancer.

  • Considering fertility preservation prior to gender affirmation surgery.

  • Considering elective egg freezing.
